I just thought I'd add this as anyone who has visited my house around Samhain has always liked the idea.
Ever since I was little even in a catholic household we've had this tradition and I still carry it on today. As theories say that the wall between the dead and the living is thinner around that time of year, we have always embraced it rather than feared it.
Many use the jack o lanterns to scare away spirits and other such things, to keep away the playful spirits.
For us, we've always assumed that family that has passed on will come to visit, so we light our fire, pull up a few spare chairs and leave out a glass of our passed loved ones favourite tipple, and when we go to bed, make sure the fire is built up but safe and leave our spirit guests to enjoy a drink by the fire.
It's nice to think of them all gathered around the fire having a chat again.

That is a lovely idea Muireann, I think my past relations are too busy looking after our long past pets.
