Yule/Christmas Essential Oils – for a fragrant household this festive season

Spices
Cinnamon
Clove
Bay

Citrus
Mandarin
Orange
Tangerine

Trees
Pine
Cedarwood

Resins
Frankincense
Myrrh

If you have a plastic tree in your house and want to evoke the scents of a pine forest, simply spray the tree (before you put the lights on) with a mixture of 300ml water and 6 drops of essential oil of pine, or put a few drops of pine oil on a piece of absorbent material and tuck it around the trunk of the tree.

House spray – pine 4 drops, mandarin 2 drops, cinnamon 1 drop, frankincense 1 drop, all diluted in 300ml water in a plant spray.

Log fires – put one drop of essential oil per log, and only one oil log per fire. You can use any old wood that happens to be around, but the fire will smell like the wood from which the particular oil was extracted. Warning - Essential oils are inflammable, so unless the oil has been given time to soak into the wood you might see more sparks than you bargained for. It is a good idea to prepare several logs at the same time and use them as needed.
Firewood oils – sandalwood, cypress, cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh

Oil blend to use on candles – mandarin 4 drops, geranium 1 drop, cinnamon 1 drop (this formula can also be used as a room spray in 600ml water)
Light the candle and wait until the wax begins to melt and then add one drop just by the wick. Bay is a good choice, as is pine and mandarin.

Decorations.
Pine cones – put into a large plastic bag with a cotton wool ball to which you have added 2 drops of pine oil. Seal the bag and leave overnight, and in the morning the cones will be gently suffused with their natural aroma. They can then be decorated with ribbons which have been infused with the essential oils of the season. Simply add 6 drops of an essential oil to half a pint of water, swish the ribbons around in this and dry them.
Holly and ivy decorations can be tied in ribbons and infused with bay or a citrus essential oil. Ribbons for mistletoe could be infused in a more sensual oil!
Oranges studded with cloves are a classic. The natural preservative power of the cloves can be enhanced by rolling the oranges before hand in orange and clove essential oils.

Store aromatic decorations separately by aroma in sealed polythene bags, and their impact will last from year to year.

Thanks for that RS ................ I love all the oils listed there and often burn the spicy ones in the winter. There's some good tips there. Do you know I think I've got that book so I'll have to have a rummage!
