I was at work at the time (in a BUPA nursing home) and we had the telly on for the residents as normal. I can remember the news coming on about a plane crashing into the World Trade Centre and our initial thoughts were 'what a terrible accident' etc etc. As the news continued we watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit and the reality dawned that this was no accident. I remember feeling shocked, sick to the stomach, confused and generally worried and frightened at what was going to happen next. We, (me and 4 care assisstants) were glued to the telly throughout the day as much as we could anyway (we were all on a 12hr shift and obviously had routine duties to do). We couldn't believe what we were seeing unfold in front of our eyes. It was a dreadful day.
How did I feel afterwards......... anger, shock pissed off at the knee jerk reaction of politicians who continually fail to adress the root causes of incidents like this. And I can remember how solumn everyone felt for a very long time afterwards.
Terrible
Same question but I'd like this to include the London bombings too
This is going to be a fairly long reply, here goes.....
When the Twin Towers were hit: We (Mum and me) didn't hear about it until about 6pm. It was only when one of the kids' dad came in and asked us our opinion about it that we first knew that something was happening. He told us that it had happened and we turned on the tv to be greeted with the site of someone jumping from one the towers to their death. That is a picture that has stayed with me ever since. At first, I thought that it was something out of a film, or something, and it took a while to sink in that it was real.
The feeling that it left me with was total shock and horror. I couldn't believe that there were (and are) people out there that are so bloody evil. We had a Mum here at the time that actually lost good friends in the North Tower, so she was distraught, and it filtered down to her kids (naturally) and it was a strange time, to be honest, to have to put a brave face on in front of the kids, but to be so sad in reality, but not be able to show it
July 7th bombings: I first heard about it from Mum.She was about to get on a bus, when something happened and the driver shouted about the buses being bombed in the capital (it was a bus that was due to travel to the heart of London). Mum phoned me and I turned on the tv and saw the twisted wreckage of the bus in Russell Square. The first thought that ran through my mind, was 'Not again, please'. A little while later, I really got to worrying as one of the Mum's of the children we care for, was due to be going to work on that very bus! Being unable to get hold of her on her mobile was unbearable, but she eventually sent us a text saying that she had just missed getting that same bus (she had seen it pulling away from the stop) and she was on the next bus after the one that was bombed.
I was stunned, really, as I thought (and hoped) that 9/11 had been the start and end of such world changing events (at least in peace-time). Looking back on it, it was just the start.
If you could be Prime Minister/President for the day and you could have one new law or statute passed, what would you have?
Minty. xx (sorry about the length of that reply ). _________________
First off...the length was fine. It is so strange how our lives can be changed in an instant. Those days touched so many, and showed many how strong they truely are.
As for what I would do...I would pass legislation that would take better care of those who have no health insurance or even food for the table. Something has to be done for those who have nothing...food, a home, basic medical care.
Same question please... _________________ "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France
Over here in the UK I would bring back National Service starting from the age of 16..... conditions would be that if you were NOT staying on at school, going to college or Uni, starting an apprenticeship or getting a job then you would have no choice but to do national service. All these little lay abouts that doss around and scrounge off the state and a re a scurge on society should be drafted. Young girls should not be excluded just because they get pregnant... the same conditions should apply but creche facilities should be provided.
Then hopefully they will learn not only a trade or skill but will learn discipline and respect, something todays youth appear to have very little of!!
House...I just love that show. Maybe he could figure out what I constantly am in pain???
I like the way you think...same question please...could you also say why??? _________________ "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France
A show called Kath and Kim...it's from Australia (although they are making a US version...not too sure about that one ). I would love to meet the people that make it and also go to Australia...so two birds with one stone That , and I think that it is hilarious
Along the same vein...if you could be a character from a book (classic or modern fiction) who would you be and why? _________________
Tom Booker from the Horse Whisperer....what he did with horses and kids was just fantastic....
Is there one character from any book, that you totally hated? _________________ "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France
Good question.....I don't remember ever having hated a character in a book, but there have some that I've disliked. One that springs to mind is Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park (in the book his fate was graphically described... )
